The Top 10 Pop Albums of 2026 ...so far

 

 That time of year again. These lists serve as a decent snapshot of where the year is heading in terms of music. I have already received promos for albums dropping as far out as August in my inbox, so they are really going to need to bring it to compete with the top five albums on this list. When it comes to pop, what you are not going to see much of are big mainstream radio artists that are part of the music industry machine that spits bullshit out on an assembly line with two dozen producers and even more songwriters making a product for the sheep to consume. Maybe two are adjacent to that machine, though are unlike the bulk of their peers. 

What I want from my pop is catchy songs that have actual instruments being played, rather than just empty calories being pumped into my ears. My people refer to this sort of thing as their guilty pleasures, and I do not use that term, as anyone on this list is better than vapid shit kids on TikTok are dancing to. Hip Hop has pretty much been garbage this year; only two artists have managed to rise from that trash pile to form music with depth.  There are links to full reviews if you want to check these out, and with all that said, here are the top 10 pop albums of 2026 so far. 

10-Mothica-'Somewhere In-Between"

In a shift from the dark synth pop of "Kissing Death," Mothica is shifting into a more modern metal sound that is not unlike what artists like Poppy and Spiritbox are doing. You can't accuse her of making the same album twice, which I admire.

9-Qveen Herby-"Isle of Qveen"

Her second album proves to be one of the few on this list that delivers what you expect you are going to get, going into though, she is much more polished this time around. She combines a catchy blend of rapping and singing. The wheel is not being re-invented, but what she does have is a smart streak of creativity and perhaps more attitude now than when I first heard her.

8- Nine Inch Noize- "S/t" 

Nine Inch Noize is a collaborative album between producer Alex Ridha, aka Boys Noize, and Nine Inch Nails, which is now basically just Reznor and Atticus Ross.  If you are looking for big arena-rock riffs, that is not happening, as the songs reimagined here are strictly electronic. That's not to say the synths don't have heft, and Reznor's voice roots it in the sound you expect from him. The track listing replicates their Coachella set list.. Pretty much just dance versions of  the originals, making them suited for the Coachella crowd indeed.

8-Cobrah- "Torn" 

If you combined the otherworldly alien nature of Poppy and mixed it with the hyper sex of Slayyyter, the results would be similar. Musically close to Poppy, with the electronic throb keeping the songs together. This is also an apt description of the title track that opens this album. On the second song, which is about Instagram is seductively lures you to check out her Instagram. There is a bit of a Charli XCX attitude involved in what goes down here as well.

7-Nine Inch Noize- "s/t"

6-Ghost Bells - "Caracoture"

This duo blends various sub-genres of dark electronic music into a moody but buoyant pop that feels like it is haunted by the 90s. The female vocals offer a childlike sing-song cadence to their chant. Repetition is king here and works.

5-Charli XCX-"Wuthering Heights"

  This soundtrack finds her deviating from the normal ode of operations, which are club classics, and instead draws more avant-garde classical music with weird atmosphere coating the bulk of these songs in a smart shift away from having another Brat Summer.

4-Dalek- "Brilliance of a Falling Moon"

The new Die Antwoord has not dropped yet, so the competition when it comes to hip-hop is not as thick this year, but he broke into the top 5 this time around, thanks to songs that work off of what made hip-hop great in the 90s, but with more sonic depth and lyrical integrity.

3- Lights - "A6EXTENDED"

 Canadian pop songwriter Lights released an extended version of her "A6" album with 8 new songs, which is a whole ass album, that proved to be better than what the Instagram divas on the radio were rolling off the assembly line so far this year. Hooks with smarts to them in abundance here.

2-Joji- "Piss in the Wind"

He sidestepped expectations with an oddity of an album that continues to grow on me. More organic than previous releases but also more experimental as it dips into shoegazing at times, which was not on my bingo card. More artists need to take these kinds of chances.

1- Slayyyter- "WOR$T GIRL IN AMERICA"

This one was almost too close to call, and who knows what the competition for these albums might turn out to be by the end of the year, but She delivered less experimentation andd took a hookier groove approach that sticks to your ears harder than Joji's more atmospheric musings, which were still pretty potent. But this is the pop list, not the shoegaze list, so she took the top spot, as her attitude oozes what you want from pop stars in 2026.

February's Top 10 Albums

Another February is done, so let's get you abreast of new releases. This might help you, casual readers, with what you might have missed.  I am not doing little blurbs on them, just linking the reviews. This helps me organize my lists for the end of the year by listing the album's genre. This does not mean that these albums have been released this month, but it is a list of new or upcoming albums I have enjoyed the most. I have albums in my in-box that are not coming out til June, so I am normally way ahead of the curve in this regard. They are ranked in order of what I have listened to the most. Mothica : "Somewhere In Between "

In a shift from the dark synth pop of "Kissing Death," Mothica is shifting into a more modern metal sound that is not unlike what artists like Poppy and Spiritbox are doing. Heavier guitars are just being pushed more to the forefront, so it's not a huge leap from her previous sound, and it does not feel like she is jumping on a bandwagon. The pop sound that she toyed with on her last album is being refined and brought to a larger-than-life cinematic magnitude. Lyrically, it is not as conceptual, but it deals with themes of inner struggle. 

With the slicker production comes more epic layers of vocals as well as huge electronic sounds crashing down. She has played big rock fests like Welcome to Rockville before so this is not far removed from the nu-metal anthems bands there normally pump out. The chorus to "Save Your Roses" is more dramatic. They brought out a great vocal performance that finds her belting it out when the dynamics call for it. "Bullet" has more groove and more emotional dynamic. McKenzie tugs feelings from her guts on this performance. 

The title track closes the album, the opening verse almsot presents it as more of a ballad until the chorus kicks in and the down-tuned chug of guitar churns it up into something of more epic sonic proportions. Even with the larger-than-life production value this time around, the message she carried on the last album is conveyed here as well, just without the romnacing a personifcation of death motif this time around. Some of the more hushed vocal refrains remind me a little of Taylor Swift. I will go ahead and round this up to a 9.5, so it did not grab me as much as the last album. Perhaps some of this is just getting used to the more radio-ready mixing choices and streamlined elements, but it does show growth.

The Top 10 Pop Albums of 2024

Pop does not have to be a bad word. Sadly the music industry takes it down a deeper hole of vapid capitalism, by pumping out products rather than music with anything to say.  Unlike their more mainstream counterparts, these albums were not rolled from the same assembly line and did not need the teams of songwriters and producers to create for them, they generally did this themselves.  Here are albums that stand shoulder to shoulder with other genres, proving pop does not have to be trash, despite being that more often than not these days. 

 After I sort through the top 10 albums of all the respective genres, I use those lists to compile the top 10 albums of the year for 2024. The very fact these bands made it on the list speaks to how great these albums are, so it's not a slight that the number 8 album is above the 9th album, there is something that just gives it an edge that makes me want to listen to it more. After all, we can try to look cool and pick the hippest bands for a list, but at the end of the day what makes an album the best is that it makes you want more, you look forward to listening to it again. 10- Little Hag -"Not That's What I Call Little Hag" 

Clever indie pop occupies a needed void in this kind of pop music. She sings about her vibrator, and adds quirky touches of actual instruments, more larger artists need to take notes from here.

9-Lauren Mayberry - "Vicious Creature" 

Here first solo album might not be on the level of  Chvrches but does allow you to hear some different sides of her, though her vocal approach is not wildly different. Solid song diverted my thoughts from obsessing about the fact this could have been studio time invested in a new album from her band, but she seems pretty earnest in her efforts here.

8-Eminem -" The Death of  Slim Shady"  

The opening track to Marshall Mathers' 12th album is a minute and a half, making it more of an intro to remind you who he is without having to knock on your TV set. This album might be s better than most pop music on the radio these days, even if it's not his best album. I am glad he did not censor himself and went for it on this one, which is actually this album's strength.

7-Allie X - "Girl With No Face" 

She has always created a more thoughtful take on pop music, however, once she thinks too deeply into things the more she drifts in a dark wave direction. The 80s hint of it can certainly be heard on this album. This album is pretty infectious and another act that proves you do not have to have a whole team of songwriters and producers to make pop music.

6-Denzel Curry -" The King of the Mischievous South" 

When it comes to Hip-hop this year there seems to be a Bone Thugs N Harmony theme when it comes to what is resonating with me. . While the phrase of lyrics being spat here, does share a similar cadence to Bone, there is more of a trap feel than what $uicide Boy$ were doing,.This much like their Louisiana peers, care about songwriting, and there is a darker vibe to what they are doing. For me to download a hip-hop album these days they have to be doing something right and care about writing songs, even if it is only to gain the kind of clout they rap about

5-Poppy- "Negative Spaces" 

I think Poppy is pretty sincere in what she does, but she also blurs the lines in what she does. This album is not "Suffocate". This album has nothing to do with Knocked Loose. Just because there is a distorted guitar on some songs does not mean this is not a pop album. It's a little over-produced and relies on her charisma, but it's fun which is what pop should be.

The third album by this dark pop singer finds a mix of post-millennial dark-wave sounds with thoughtful hooks in a concept album theme of romancing the death as personified as the Grim Reaper. As someone who has a worshipful adoration of death myself, I can appreciate this, as well as an artist who steers clear of the normal pop tropes.

3-$uicide Boy$ - "New World Depression" 

Since Hip-hop does not have its own list just know this was the best hip-hop album of the year by a long shot. This is the fourth album by the New Orleans-based duo. The production value of their albums continues to improve, now finding the raw lo-fi quality that marked their early days as the first wave of Soundcloud rappers gone and it's not unlike when Bone Thugs N Harmony was at their peak in the 90s.

 2-Charli XCX -"BRAT" 

If you strip away the cultural marketing tactics that put her in the spotlight this year, she already has released an album of Strong Bangers, but she was not letting it just be a great album. It's the nature of the beast she is in the belly of, but that aside, these songs bump seriously, and I have been a fan of hers for some time now, so glad to see she is getting the recognition she deserves.

1-Taylor Swift - "The Tortured Poets Department" 

She had pretty decent competition, but at the end of the day, it's her songwriting and lyrical ability that continues to dominate pop music. There is a reason she has a fantastical cult of fans. If we weigh her other albums again this one there might be more debate, but that is where she is as an artist, Swift only has her own work to measure things against. I think this is at least as strong as her more recent work, which is enough to put her over the artists like Charli XCX, who made a great album by pop standards, Swift is just head and shoulders above those standards, as she is not as much of a product.

Gothtober - Wil's 10th Annual Halloween Playlist

 Here is my 10th annual Halloween Playlist. The world holds as many distractions and diversions as the previous years, I am just making a more concerted and intentional effort to focus on celebrations of the Halloween season around me since my soundtrack pretty much remains constant year. I believe if we forget the things that brought us joy as children, we will become miserable adults buried in anxiety over bills and the stock market. This makes a proper soundtrack dedicated to darkness even more needed to capture the magical excitement of Halloween. Perhaps these songs might bring some sonic horror to your ears and carry Halloween into the rest of the year for you. This year all but one song is from new releases. I am continuing the tradition of not repeating artists from previous years. Goth and all its various sub-genres are the most obvious tombs to plunder, I am including a few artists that lean in a more rock or metal direction. Lyrically, the songs are at least metaphors for things that go bump in the night or are related to the season. This year’s theme seems to be death. As the veil between the living and the dead thins, may you be happily haunted and continue to play this loudly in dark places!

Mothica : "Kissing Death"

The third album by this dark pop singer finds a mix of post-millennial dark-wave sounds with thoughtful hooks in a concept album theme of romancing the death as personified as the Grim Reaper. As someone who has a worshipful adoration of death myself, I can appreciate this, as well as an artist who steers clear of the normal pop tropes. Sonically this falls somewhere in the zip code of Poppy, though vocally not as aggressive, with a more introspective approach closer to Imogen Heap, Taylor Swift. or Chvrches. "Exit Plan" contemplates the chaos of crawling out of addiction and the thinking that comes with those behaviors. 

"Another High" continues to ponder how you live when life has become something that is killing you. This album is well produced, with all the sounds very crisp and balanced in the mix. The more organic elements like guitars are not known until this song. "Doomed" finds her reflecting back on her early days making music in her room as a teenager. It's more of a ballad. Where melodramatic pop ballads normally would bore me this has enough raw honesty to make it work. "Curiosity Killed the Moth" exceeds expectations with more adventurous sounds than what your normal Tiktok pop dabbles in. 'Red" has more of a 90s alternative radio sound. The dynamic had the recoil/ expand formula from the 90s in place, but it still works as well here as it did back in the day. 

Much like Blue Oyster Cult, her take on "the Reaper" shows little fear and focuses on an infatuation. There is a very Los Angeles sound to "Toxins" which has a playful electro feel. Reverb heady guitar rings in the background of "Afterlife" It's a smooth neon ride, with the rock guitar creeping up in the undercurrent. "Mirage" toys with the Western feel, as her sultry voice glides over the grooves when they kick in. Once again she proves to be a step ahead of pop artists trying to climb up to the Taylor Swift pedestal, but not playing the same game and creating a more original sound. 

The title track is another bedroom ballad with strummed guitars pining for the Reaper. There is an acceptance of death in this song. The last song closes the album with more of a synth wave vibe to the thoughtful brand of pop she continues to weave. I will give this one a 9.5, and see how it grows on me, it finds her carving out her own place in the pop landscape, which appeals to those who find the more vapid radio-dominant forms of it insulting, the concept alone will win over darker hearts. If you want honest pop music that is in touch with its shadow side this is for you.
