Ethel Cain : "Perverts"

This is an ambient album she released before "Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You." This finds her at odds with the concept of sound vs song on the title track, which is twelve minutes of ambient noise. The first traditional song is "Punish," which was also the lead single from this album. It is sparse and tentative, far from her most memorable song. She uses a ghostly croon that is hesitant. Electric guitar does come in, but the sluggish chords only had a pulse of sound as the seeping dynamic builds like slow water rising in a storm.

The swirling noise that sets "Houseofpsychoticwomen" into motion is more boring than unnerving. There is a whispered voice underneath some of the sounds when it ebbs down a bit. Not really much of a purpose to the track. It takes about a minute and a half to warm up into "Vaciliator" form, more of a melody than what we heard on "Punish", and is the best song so far, if not the entire album. 'Onanist' uses its lo-fi production to create an opaque atmosphere. This drones on for two and a half minutes before the reverb-drenched vocals begin to haunt the song. A spoken vocal track guides "Pulldrone". At five minutes in a buzzing sound begins to slowly swell. That is what the rest of the track drones on.

"Eitenne" feels like more of an interlude, but all drone works off more of a pulse of sound rather than a song, so it's more of a song than some of the noisier moments, thanks to the minimalist piano line. "Thatorchia" is just a wave of noise with her voice in a distant wail over it. "Amber Waves" is one of the only actual songs on this album; it's slow-core folk, where each string lingers before being plucked, and her breathy vocals muse over the sparsity. I will round this down to a 6, I only like two songs, but appreciate the willingness to experiment; it would have been better off released as an EP.
