Known as the Sunshine State, Florida has a thriving goth scene. I would not live here if that were not the case. Most of it is in Tampa, home of the Castle, and Orlando, but even in this singer's base of operations in Ft Lauderdale, there is a passion for darker music. Her brand is future pop with banging pop beats, not dark enough or ethereal enough to be darkwave, but hooky and grooving, so it is hard to complain. Rather than just singing lyrics declaring a romantic obsession of unrequited love, she is singing about more esoteric topics. More New Age ponderings than deep occult musings, it does give her a witchy vibe and offers something different to define her as an artist.
"Waves of Time" is the lead single from this album, but it is not as hooky as the previous track. It does further explore the lyrical theme of the album. I prefer the more driving pulse that propels "Ocean of Sound". This high-energy banger could get any goth night dance floor urgently churning. Unlike most solo artists, she is not singing with a sex-forward purr, but there is a lighter, more hopeful tone to her voice. At times, this reminds me of the dance remixes Tori Amos released in the 90s. Unlike Tori, fewer emotional issues are apparent in what she does.
Most goth music is a homage to an era of the 80s, which is not the case here, and is only heard in the more new wave beat carrying the last song. I will give this album a 9, as it is possessed by catchy grooves and is not the same old same old, while I generally like the sexy goth kitten vibes artists like this typicaly project, I am also ok with a change of pace and some diffeent energy even if it is not as dark as what I normally listen to, it is a great deal of fun.
