In the depths of the more brutal and gore-grind leaning bowels of death metal, writhe this monster. The vocals are gurgled up from the sewers running down to hell. This is the band's first full-length. They are great at setting the mood. The mix is somewhat lo-fi, but the point gets across, and it gives these guys their charm. They are heavy as fuck but still care about writing songs. You should know that heaviness alone only goes so far for me, so if I am digging a band, they have to have songs. This Canadian band makes an argument for the country's death metal cred. The riffs bulldozed, but the dynamics are broken up. It is going to be hard to beat these guys when it comes down to catchy death metal that is still gurgling heavily.
They pour on the speed, a few blast beats at a time, rather than just flushing you down their sonic toilet in a swirling vacuum of sound like many bands of their ilk. Things are broken up by varying tempos, as a chaotic guitar solo wails in the distance. "Putrifacation" grinds with a more straightforward menace. They pour on more speed here, but it is not a total deal breaker as they groove the riff out as things progress. "Larval" is more deliberate but still very aggressive.
A gritty chug drives " Infected to Rot." The burly bass keeps things churning when they drop down to a more syncopated section later. It is nuanced touches like this that keep things interesting, rather than just getting bogged down in the gurgle of the vocals. "Unknown Origins" flirts more with grindcore. They cram a great deal into those two minutes. I prefer the groove that opens the last song. It hits more like Cannibal Corpse. A minute in, they gradually begin to step on the gas. When growling the word "inorganic," it sounds like they are saying "evil Garden." I will give this album a 9.5. This is going to be the album to beat this month. This beast drops July 11th on Everlasting Spew Records.
