DEATHSTARS : "Everything Destroys You"

This Swedish goth metal band was founded by younger brother of Jon Nodtveidt from Dissection. Other members of Dissection have played in this band over the years. They sound nothing like Dissection aside from the distortion of the guitars , that is it industrial goth from their. "Midnight  Party" benefits from a little better writing than more metallic pound of the opener. In some ways it reminds me of a cross between the 69 Eyes and Aqua, the latter being due to the use of female backing vocals. "Anti All" is more grandiose in Sisters of Mercy like dramatics they engage in. The ebb and flow of dynamics gets creepier on "Everything Destroys You". The synth began to over take the guitars a couple of songs ok, but they ride the line in effectiveness just enough to work.

"Between Volumes and Voids" does not do a great deal to stand out. After repeat listens it reminds me of diet  Dimmu Borgir. If you stripped the last vestiges of black metal from Dimmu. "An Atomic Prayer" finds things getting a little darker and working off a better creep. The female vocals that take over the chorus do not work as well as intended but it's not a deal breaker. "Blood For Miles" . There is more going on sonically with "the Churches of Oil" which seems to have a more serious lyrical tone. I think the song would better if the synths were dialed back and the female vocals relegated to a more periphery role. Aside from that it is one of the album's better songs.

"the Infrahuman Masterpiece" is weighed down by some of the production bloat. The chorus does work better as the female vocals are not atop them. The album ends with the heavier guitar driven "Angel of Fortune and Crime". Though much like the album as a whole the melodrama takes away from this being a heavy album though if you like your goth metal with a hefty dose of that then you are in good hands. I will give this album an 8.
