Abraham : " Debris de Mondes Perdus"

Swiss sludgsters Abraham are right on time with their brand of raw yet atmospheric and emotional music for a world on fire. "Blood Moon, New Alliance" follows up a more bombshell of brooding opener. The build of the song is pretty great as it is pounding while still interesting sonically. Then things take an odd turn. There is more of an angular dissonance that sounds like Fugazi strung out on heroin. There is a tension as the drums hold back. As the song progresses it swirls with a jazz like chaos. The vocals are more sung, teetering at not being in key, though not the more barked vocals that narrated the first two songs. Their main singer and second guitarist are gone, and this left the drummer to step in an handle the main vocal duties.

I like the darker throb to "Ravenous is the Night". It sounds more like Neurosis, which when it comes to modern sludge is hard to find a band that is not influenced by them to some extent, "Our Words Born In Fire" have an angular throb to it, while in terms of the metallic approach your ears are attacks with it might come in colors much like perhaps "Souls At Zero" era Neurosis employed, the vocals gathering menace as the song progresses. "Fear Overthrown" kind of picks up where the previous song left off. The vocals are beginning to have a uniform yell to them. Sure, some blasty kind of beats come in yet the pulse of the song throbs in the same way.

"A Celestial Funeral" continues down a darker more sonic sounding Neurotic path. The throaty vocals being the most like their American counterparts. This is way this album has begun to fade into, well for what they are doing it sounds great but way to wear your influences on your sleeve. The addition of female vocals changes the game and keeps them from defaulting into being another band worshipping at the altar of Neurosis, which I do not remember being such a thing on the previous album. The sung vocals however work. This album works more often than it doesn't and my only beef with it is the Neurotic tendencies. I will give it an 8.5.
