Portrayal of Guilt : "We Are Always Alone"

It would be easy to think I did not like the spastic style of genres like power violence or grind core. That is not true as this band proves. Their songs can be short bursts of manic energy, but they keep it dark and emotive. They also know how to write a fucking song. The minute and a half opener prove this point for sure How ever they are growing out of the minute and a half format as only 3 of 9 songs follow that format. . On the second song they slow things down and become more deliberate with the heavy and the results are devastating. I have to imagine Converge is a major influence for these guys, along with black metal. Black metal mainly being found in the harsh scowl of the vocals.

The drumming is great on "A Tempting Pain".  The focal point of the song seems to be more on heavy than emotion so I prefer the first two. "It's Already Over" is dark as fuck and twice as grim. This is how I want my heavy music. This shit is beautifully demented. They continue to slow things with "Masochistic Oath". The vocals are more prominent in the mix on this album and dominate this song. I prefer what does down on the almost sludge like "They Want us all to Suffer". The dig down even deeper into the sludge for "Garden of Despair" before stepping on the blast beats before as heavy as shit hard core gang vocal.  They open up a wider and more melodic sonic spectrum on "My Immolation" . That does not mean they do not get heavy as fuck because they do at the beginning and then go in a welcome new direction from there, it has a more post punk feel, which I am always ok with.

They bring the more sonic kind of heavy I love going into the last song. They are pretty deliberate using very chilling chord structures.  This is going to be the fucking album to beat this year this shit kicks your face in and is a beautiful dark mess, just what the world needs right now/ I will go ahead and round this one up to a 10 as the parts that did not tug at me right away will grow on me.

Frontline Assembly" : "Mechanical Soul"

Much like many of my other favorite industrial bands who are not Ministry these guys are going in a more edm direction. Synths are up front and center. The vocals are what you might expect from these guys. I mean this is dark enough for me. It borders on dark wave. I am ok with the more synth-centric focus when they give it some heft on the second song. 17 albums in these guys obviously know what they are doing. I know Dino from Fear Factory is supposed to show up at some point in time so they are not forsaking guitars altogether. Their 7th album "Millennium" is my favorite. Jean Luc from Front 242 also appears on this album. I prefer the more melodic touch to the effects used on the vocals for "Unknown". At 54 Bill Leeb is still young enough that his performance is convincing. The vocals are mainly his trade marked tensed whispering .

If robots could trip on acid and make music the result would be the song "New World". I normally want these guys to be more driving , but I will accept this. The number of people surprised by the fact I like a song called "Rubber Tube Gag" should equal none. It has a pretty sexy pulse. The keep the sex factor in motion with "Stifle" . Here is also where the guitar shows up. This might be the album's best song. "Alone" works off a darker slinky groove. More about the creepy than sexy. Not that sex is anything I normally associate with these guys. A more Led Zeppelin like beat drive the more Germanic feel of "Barbarians"

The rest of the album offers few surprises m but is an exercise in this more club oriented sound they have evolved into. It is dark so I have no complaints. Does it measure up against their peak in the 90s , no. It6 is not unlike newer KMFDM, doesn't play it as safe as these guys and has sharper hooks. The grooves are great and pretty dark so I do not need much from these guys. Would I like more guitar . Yes. Is this their best album ? No, it is pretty solid at this juncture in their career so I will give it a 9. If you are a fan it's a must.

Notwist : "Vertigo Days"

This is the band's first album in seven years/ I first heard these guys back in 2005.This album is marginally less organic than what I remember from them with more of an emphasis on analog synths .The groove to the second song "Exit  Strategy to myself" is more compelling . It sounds like the plugged in an actual bass to lay down the roots of "Where You Find Me" . The plaintive vocals are smooth, if not emotive. They take subdued approach to the melodies. The grooves are equal parts quirky and subtle. Sonically this album reminds me more of John Vanderslice. There are hooks but not in the in your face infectious manner of pop.

"Ship" brings an almost dance quality with the way the bass line falls under the light cadence of the vocals. Ambiance plays a much larger role for these guys this time around. There is a fragile folk feel to " Loose Ends". This also means there is less to sink your teeth into and the song almost fades into the background. Gone is the indie rock I remember these guys for, but this seems like where their path to grow would have led them. They do allow the instruments to slowly build more of a presence as the song progresses. "Into the Ice Age" kind of coasts along like a jam. There is more of  lazy hippy vibe to  the sluggish dream ballad that is "Oh Sweet Fire"

There is almost more of a folk vibe to "Sans Soleil" . Where are now getting to the portion of the album where they are settling in to dial in the pleasantries. Granted this is out of my wheel house with the more happy vibes they are given off. There is a more fragile lullaby feel to "Night's Too Dark" . I mean really the only time I would listen to this song is to go to sleep. The more upbeat pulse to "Al Sur" is a much more compelling listen. " Into Love Again" is cool enough it works for a closing song, low key dynamically but this album as a whole is more subdued.  I will give this one a  7.5.

Bloody Hammers : "Songs of Unspeakable Terror"

This time they are leaning more into the punk side of their influences and it works much better. It is not total Danzig as the Elvis side of the coin is toned down. The vocals are great and very catchy. I can appreciate how this is married to 80s metal . Or at least the more edgy cock rock side of that. That level of swagger can be felt on the second song. The more punk fueled speed of "Witchfinder General" works for what they are doing but I prefer the more melodic groove of " Not of This Earth" . There is another hooky groove to " the Ones Who Own the Dark".  I guess it goes without saying the lyrics are all horror themed which I am here for.

The big  gang chorus on "Waking the Dead" is almost too punk for me , but over all the song still works. 'Night of the Witch" is cut from a similar mold. It might be marginally darker and forsakes some of the vocal layers allowing it to fall sonically closer to say Beastmilk.  "We Are the Damned" is a shade happier than most of the other songs on this album. This is forgiven due to the thoughtful vocal melodies. They bring back more of a Tiger Army like punk feel with "the Brain That Wouldn't Die".  They give this song their last caress. When they go into more of a ballad on "Lucifer's Light" it still works.

The punk edged darker rock retains it's teeth and drive with " I Spit on Your Corpse" . This album is excellent despite pulling heavily from the Misfits at times. I will give it a 9 and see how it grows on me. I used to be on the fence about these guys , but this album won me over for sure.

Chmcl Str8jckt : "DRK PRGRSSN"

I love 90s industrial. I used to love Cleopatra Records. For better or for worse I will always check out what they send me. Right from the onset of this album the vocals make me suspect. The album is oddly mixed. It seems like they did not get the memo that vocals for this sort of thing need to be slathered in effects.  I can hear what they are going for , but the first song did not sell me on it's execution/ On "Texas" are the leaning into the Revolting Cocks cowboy vibe ? Yes. But as a song it is much better than what they opened the album with. With lyrics telling you to shove PC culture up your ass, well I can appreciate  their attitude."1911" finds things working much better for them. Oddly what worked on that song doesn't click as well on " Chosen One". Though the groove is an improvement, the guitar sits way back in the mix. The vocals need to sit back into the guitar, right not it sounds like they are covering something from Alice Cooper's "Brutal Planet" album.

For every goofy song like "Wrecking Machine" there is a cool one like " Death of Lucille". I mean even the albums by bands like Electric Hellfire that where recorded in the 90s have a sound that has stood the test of time better than this which was recorded in the past year. I get wanting to capture a sound. They have done that more often than not the problem is what they are doing with it now that they have it. "Syrinx is Gone" is the next song that really works for me. It is also a little darker than the others. Lyrically it is  little silly as it feels like the lyric are lifted from a folk metal band.

"Harpy" is also darker , which is the direction they need to follows as it sounds like something from a Tim Burton music rather than torch carrying for the second tier of 90s industrial. "Sacred Rope" is very kink focused which I strongly approve of. There is a touch of Lords of Acid to the more electronic bounce of this one. Their cover of the Police's "Invisible Sun" works for me. It does make me want to listen to the Police though. "Somber Town" is better than most but seems an odd song to close the album with/ I will give the album an 8, the production is really the only thing that holds it back and most of the time they work around it.

Asphyx : "Necroceros"

This is the band from the Netherlands  tenth album. They are not drastically changing anything. They are straight up by the books death metal. Old school death. Old school to the point their sound brings back the cross roads where death metal sprung from thrash. Yes there are a ton of bands playing old school death metal but these guys are the real deal as they have been doing it since 91. Martin Van Drunen is the only original member. They come on heavy then smooth out into a more mid tempo hooky songwriting style by the time we get to "Mount Skull" . Catchy song writing always wins out over sheer heaviness no matter what kid of metal we are talking.

"Knights Templar Stand" is another example of how just because the rule here is cool riffs alone do not a good song make , that you can do both. They put their cool riffs into a context of a functioning song. "The Years of Famine" is broken up by a melodic middle section where they guitar solo of sorts sits. It gives the dynamic shift needed even if this is not a catchy as the two previous songs. "Botox Implosion" breaks up the lyrical theme of the album. . It falls on the harder and heavier side of the equation for them . I think the more deliberate pace of " Blazing Oceans" is more powerful and proves faster does not equate heavier. It taps into what I used to love about the earlier days of death metal in the 80s & 90's .

The riff to " the Nameless Elite" is bad ass and there is no two ways about it. Please refer to my previous statement in regards to cool riffs/ I think this coolness is somewhat flushed away when they pour on the speed and sound like everyone else.  " Yeild or Die" is driven by a big riff, that sounds great , but the over all feel is pretty typical almost Amon Amarth style death metal. The title track that closes the album is more effective at you a head banging hook to lock you in. Overall original members or not this is a case of a band that made it work with the guys they had at them time. So far this is the death metal album to beat in 2021.

Comatose :" a Way Back"

I have been sitting on this album for about a week. I went to go see my girl friend in Florida for three days so took a break from writing. Now I am back at it. This band is comprised of guys from Chrome Waves and Fall to Decay. Chrome Waves has gradually been showing more of their shoe gaze side until now it is half of what they do so this is not a surprise. The songs are very well written. The vocals play a larger role than most shoe gaze this side of Nothing. There are plenty of Catherine Wheel like 90s moments that shine through on songs like "Gone" .  In the woozy swirl of guitar some of the songs can begin to run together from a similar pulse, so when they pick up the pace on "Alone" it helps to break things up.

'Skin" is an example of when it throbs into the sonic zip code of most shoe gaze. Reminding me of Jesu. The vocals are dreamy. The vocals do have purpose and are not just a texture even here. They pick things back up energy wise with " Spread" . This is help the song stand out against the otherwise lazy swagger that the genre is known for. They driving force of this song has some metal influence and given their backgrounds that only makes sense. I would not be surprised if they rip a guitar solo out in one song. There are grunge laden rock punches to "Inside". The vocals have more fitting room to unfurl melodies with this pacing.

For metal guys the guitar playing is very melodic , perhaps even more nuanced in this area than your average shoe gazing band. "Further" is also a more rock driven song that builds into a metallic dynamic with screamed vocals. Not sure that is the most necessary part of the equation but it works . They end strong with one of the album's best songs " Sinking" . It is catchier than most . I will round this album up to a 9.5, not metal but will appeal to most of the more open minded metal heads who were in stuff like Deafheaven and Alcest.

Prime Mover : "Under the Penumbra"

The opening track of this Atlanta band's new full length is very thrashy. They are smart song writers with plenty of hooks in the melodic guitar lines they can tap into when not charging full speed ahead. Death metal is also an influence of these guys. The cross roads of death metal and thrash seems to put them in a similar sonic zip code as perhaps Dark Angel. These guys snarl more often than not. I like the use of the sung vocals on the second song . They did not fall in the predictable good cop/ bad cop places. The album is well produced. There is an organic sound that reminds me of the first Machine Head album in terms of where everything sits in the mix, though the drum sound is a little less bombastic. The guitar solos serve their purposes. On 'Easy Prey" there is a chaotic layer of guitars swirling around you.

There is a more purposeful sense of melody of " Where Paradise is Buried" . Blast beats sneak in from time to time throughout this album. There are most notable on this song. The vocal come closer to being sung on this one as well. There are in fact sung layers of almost power metal like vocals layered under the primary snarl of lead vocal. I like where this song goes dynamically. They come a little closer to black metal on "Kindred Oath" . Some of the guitar hooks are pretty cool on this one. I think they are growling about the illuminati and chem trails. I support that as a worth cause to write a song about. Some of the more stompy 90s death metal riffs on this one are pretty mean, I like the bass tone on this song as well. The give the Alice Cooper classic "Eighteen" their own more metallic spin. The vocals are gruffer. They also tease the riff from "Billion Dollar Babies" at one point.

I had previously heard the more winding death metal epic that is " Thanaspherian" as it was released as a single. I like the main chug it locks into at the verse. 'Awaiting the Arrival" is on the more melodic side of death thrash. It is more mid tempo. They close out with the title track . Their songs are journeys and some have more turns than others. This one is more on the winding side as they throw a lot at you , but they do it well. These guys are a lot of fun and there is something for most fans of metal to band their heads to. I will give this album an 8, it is certainly worth checking out.

Viagra Boys : " Welfare Jazz"

This is another band that makes solid argument for Scandinavian post-punk. This album is also a stylistic shift for the band in many ways . It kicks off with the punchy "Ain't Nice" which still manages to be very danceable. The horns that crop up bring the Stooges to mind though the groove has a more electronic feel. Sabastian leads into "Toad" with an Elvis like swagger to his narrative. The song it self is less aggressive. They might have a punk back ground , but this album is not punk. The blues tinged bass of "Into the Sun"  contrasts the electronic elements blended it around it. Sabastian's vocal on this one is more soulful, They take turn a more toward new wave on "Creatures". The bounce to this one is infectious so it is hard to complain about this change in direction.

With the grooving instrumental " 6 Shooter" there a more energetic turn towards rock. Production wise it is more polished and rough around the edges, though not burdened with the slick over production of a pop album. Lyrically there is a absurd tone to "Secret Canine Agent". This is not the first song on this album that I have detected a Devo influence. It is just most prominent here. The album continues  to weave in other sonic colors that draw from a wide range of colors including gospel and disco. There is a more organic stripped down feel to "To the Country" .  Yes it does have an odd country tone to the melody. It is a misanthropic love song that is more sweet than sour.

The trailer park vibes continue with a brilliant cover of John Prine's "In Spite of Ourselves" which is one of those rare cases where I like the cover better than the original. It is the first track on this album that I seek to listen to multiple times I will give this album a 9. I think I was pretty clear about what I liked, perhaps it will grow on me

Many lamented the woes of 2020. If you are more of the mind it was not the year that was shitty , but merely a reflection of man's continuing decline then this album is going to be a very suitable to 2021 which seems to be telling 2020 to hold it's beer.

Trillonaire :" Romulus"

They are not too far out of the sonic spectrum of say the more prog latter days of Mastodon. The vocals are more ambitious. They fall somewhere between Pain of Salvation and Devin Townsend. There is some belted rock grit to them. The opening track does grow on me , but is not as good as the lead single "Dead By 25" is ambitious and more compact and catchy. The vocals are a little more toned down and serve the song. This makes the chorus punch. Is the delivery still pretty dramatic and vibrato filled? Yes. There is a more rock kick to what is happening here than your average modern prog rock.

"Underwater" is still well done. The vocals are way multi tracked across the board. This gives it a more commercial hard rock sound. This big production gives it a late 90s feel. The post grunge elements are strong. I really dig the way the vocals are spitting on " Yes, Mistress" . There is an impressive dynamic shift in how the song breaks down midway into the song. So far this is my second favorite song on the album. "Temple of Mercy" is the first song that kind of feels like filler as there is not much that stands out in the way of hooks to distinguish it from any other high energy hard rock band.

The album begins to run lower on gas in the creative department. Yes, the lead into "One in the Chamber' we as dreamy vocal. But this feels like it falls solidly in the prog wheelhouse and takes less chances. The melody does hook me. It is not a bad song, they just raised the bar high for themselves with the first three songs. They step on the gas for "We Are the Devil" . This one is more metallic in it's intentions. It almost reminds me of Anthrax. There is a proggy calm before the storm when they close the album out with "Northern Lights" . My opinion still holds the front end of this album is strong, great even, then kind falls into your typical modern metal/ hard rock, It is however even at it's most lackluster still well done so I will give this album an 8.5 .

the Ruins of Beverast : " the Thule Grimoires"

In 2021 if you are going to do black metal then this is the way to do it. You can tell it is in fact black metal, but it is not so tied down to conforming to a certain time period that it is stagnant. In fact it is full of dark new sounds that really add to the songs. It opens up with a guitar tone that sounds more like the Smiths than Darkthrone. I am not mad at this at all. It has pretty much every element I want from any metal sub-genre in terms of dynamics and sonic scope, even some clean singing that is kind of My Dying Bride.

The second song is more pagan in it's tribal drone. The doomy riff that comes in midway into things is very effective at keeping the mood darker, From a song writing perspective I would not say it is as good as the opener. By the end it gets more blasty, but with the atmospheric buzz I like."Kromlec'h Knell" is even more My Dying Bride like in the baritone croon as double bass churns under it. It is a good song, not what I expected from them. Growled vocals do come in. Things get a great deal weirder on "Mammothpolis" .by the end of the song it does have a more normal metal chug to it, but they take you on an odd journey to get there. It is almost more like a interlude as the atmosphere and the mood are the prevailing elements .

There is a melodic pulse of "Anchoress in Furs" before it floats off into a dark wonderland. I love the effects on the vocals when they come in. They are in a more sinister snarl. It is hard to pinpoint if the sung part that follows is the chorus, because they let the song unfold rather than following any kind of traditional formula. Overall this album is a real fun listen I will give this album a 9, making it a pretty hopeful out look for a typically hopeless genre.

Heretical Sect :"Rapturous Flesh Consumed"

It's been a minute since I pressed play on some new death metal . By new out within the past couple of weeks . I think Pulchra Morte was the last one I got excited about. These guys are not too far from the sonic spectrum of that band. More chaotic than Morbid Angel. The bass tone is more fuzzed out, yet more up-tempo and raging than say Incantation. There is a great deal of cavernous darkness to what they are doing . They do go down that more dark and dismal path on the second song. I appreciate the darkness in it's nature , but the song it self is not as compelling as the opener. When things get more atmospheric they do however get more interesting. This is also the longest song at ten minutes so I appreciate their commitment to concise songwriting.

By the third song they are focusing more on speed, The guitars buzz in almost more of a black metal manner The way the songs throb also brings this to mind. When they get into the meat of the song it feels more like what you might expect from any of these kinds of occult death metal bands. There is less of a signature. I like the very dark and dissonance sound going into "Degradation Temple". It starts off more death doom and then they blast more to life. This might be the best song so far. There is a weird chain gang doom feel to "Resurrection Sky" . It drones but sounds good doing it. There chanted vocals sung way in back ground. The growl that narrates the song is more articulate so they lyrics stand out.

There is some cool dissonant creepiness to the guitar that opens up "Ritual Inversion". The blast beats that follow it in , make it sound more like everyday black metal. This album does not fit neatly into one sub genre. The vocals are death metal for sure.  Overall I have really enjoyed this album. I will give it an 8.5. If you are looking for well rounded death metal , not over come by it's need for speed , then this is worth schecking out.

Mix Tape Mania : Wil Metal

Metal has always been one of the most important parts of my life. It was the music that first resonated with me as a child. Dark and empowering. It often gave me strength to power the bullshit hand the world often dealt me. So sharing it is sharing a part of who I am.  Here are ten tracks from metal bands who are the most defining of who I am excluding Iron Maiden . Yes, they are one of my favorites but bands like Maiden, Pantera and Slayer are so big it is hard to think of them as music that is mine, despite having an Iron Maiden tattoo.  I mean sure my brother has even said when he sees something Iron Maiden it makes him think of me, but does it make him think of me as much as say King Diamond? not likely. Here is a part of me, and it's cool part you can head bang to.

Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum- 'Sleep is Wrong"

 Pallbearer- " Foundations"

Atriarch- "Altars"

Watain- " Four Thrones"

 Acid Bath - "The Blue"

Kyuss- Demon Cleaner"

Type O Negative- 'She Burned Me Down"

Voivod- "Into My Hyper Cube" <- allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" black="" diamond-="" frameborder="0" height="315" horsemen="" hypercube="" iframe="" into="" king="" my="" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4G38cwcM9vc" width="560">

King Diamond- " the Black Horsemen"

Converge - " In Her Blood"
