Polkadot Cadaver : "Echoes Across the Hellscape"

This might get confusing because this band was formed when Dog Fashion Disco broke up and they are Dog Fashion Disco, who got back together and put out another album just last year. Where Dog Fashion Disco is more heavily influenced by Mr Bungle, these guys are straightforward melodic metal with a progressive slant. The first two songs are well written for sure, and play if safe with strong melodies and interesting lyrics. "Godless Noise" picks up the pace and does not make the most of the groove the gallop of the first two songs had, though this one is more aggressive. It depends on what you want from these guys.

Things get more Faith No More on "A Dog Without Water". This works much better than the more in-your-face rapped verses of " Eat My Tongue".  There is more nuance to "Catch Me If You Can" which is a little more brooding in the verses.  They have been taking notes from System of a Down on this one. There is a touch of punk in the verses leading into the chorus of "Ripe Fruit For the Wicked". Their chorus is catchy enough and the riffs are fine-tuned, so not sure what else you might ask from these guys. I like the lyrics to this one as well.

How can you go wrong with a song about shape-shifting reptilian overlords? The music fits the lyrics well enough so that makes it a win for the band. They close the album with a darker touch. There is a touch of horror to what they do that I appreciate. I will give this album a 9, they really shine when it comes to songwriting on this one. Not metal for people who like the kind of metal we dive into here, as they will consider this harder-edged rock. Either way, it's very effective.
