Mega Bog : "End of Everything"

The key is to catch me with the right color of weird. This album came out in May and not sure why it's sat in the note section I keep of albums to check out , but we are digging into it now.  This is the same shade of weird that Kate Bush created. But let me do you the courtesy of clarifying the Kate Bush comparison. All too often I have had my hopes raised to weathering heights that came with unrealistic expectations. Vocally aside from some quirky phrasing here and there, Erin Birgy does not sing like Kate Bush. The theatrics of her performance are still within the pop range where Kate gets into opera for elves and fairies. Instead we are talking more about the song writing narratives Bush captured on "the Sensual World" and combine it with a more "Hounds of Love" like synth sound.

Where the first two songs are rather focused, there is less hooky intention on "Love Is". There are moments of 80s pop chaos, that are allowed to wander into the neon night. "Don't Doom Me Now" feels like a cross between Debbie Harry and Devo. The bounce of the song helps it from meandering. "All and Everything' gets back into a dramatic new wave that is bathed in cinematic atmosphere. Not a pop, but I appreciate the grandiose aspirations the song has, too many artists these days do not think big and swing for the fences like this. It certainly sets this project apart. "Anthropocene" waltzes around in a wonderland that is dark enough to appeal to me.

"Complete Book of Roses" is like Bjork fronting Pink Floyd. Though Erin does some throat scraping vocalizations. It is the first song where I hear prog influences. Not the album's catchiest tune but it works for what it is.  The album closes with the title track that soars out into some synth wave. The vocals contrast this with a more folk flavored melody. I will give this album a 9, it's sense of adventure elevates it over retro synth pop that is prevalent on Soundcloud.
