Deeper Graves : "Pull Me Toward the Dark"

This serves as the third album from  Jeff Wilson's more dark wave-leaning project since. Where Chrome Waves has gradually drifted in a darker, more post-punk direction, this album bridges the gap where darkness becomes heavy. In some ways, it is closer to what a band like Cold Cave does, which is a fair comparison as it is forward-thinking rather than just paying homage to the 80s. Not that theopening track would not work in rather seamlessly with a goth night DJ's set. The drive of an actual drummer helps set it apart.

"Over My Shoulder' finds things growing even darker.  "All These Years" reminds me a bit of Nachtmystium's more melodic moments witha harrowing, depressing feel echoing up from it as the drums pound behind the melody. The disco hi-hats come in to pick up the pace for the more dance-inducing"Where Do We Go From Here'.  The heavily effected vocals sit back in the guitars toward the back of the mix, though most of the lyrics cut through the mix. The sounds are deeply layered in the cavernous mix, but do not get lost.

This changes a little on 'the Truth" as the vocals become more obscured and the synth wave feel of the song begins to take over. There is a decent 80s-inspired groove to it, which I respect more than if these guys were just another band trying to be Sisters of Mercy. It is harder to deny that there is a more Cure-like feel to the title track that closes the album with the kind of sprawling ambiance that is s Robert Smith's calling card. Though there is a great deal of buildup with this song, without really bring the expected release from the tension. I will give this album a 9.5, as it is more compelling than past releases in the heartfelt nature of its grim songs.Being released on Diorder Recordings.
