Adversvm : "Vama Marga"

The first song finds the band capable of traversing sonic depth and on the heavier side of death doom as needed. This German band recently added the keyboardist from Evoken to their ranks, which is what made me take notice. This marks the band's third full length. Not sure I would quiet lump them into funeral doom as I am not getting that same sense of depressive longing , so they seem more like an atmospheric death doom band to me, but I am only one song in so things can change, but I like where they are heading so far. The second song confirms what I suspected as the throw themselves into fast paced death metal before slowing back down into the more spectral brand of doom they prefer to languish in. When they changed dynamic gears it is very deliberate double bass driven death metal.

"Feind" turns into the trudge of sludged paced death metal with a steady stream of double bass running under it. They do combine a great cross section of creepy sounds that ring out over the din , it's still death metal flavored doom at best. There is a whispered break down where it drops down to synth and guitar, but the vocals are typically relegated to just a low death metal gurgle of a growl. Almost obligatory, but much like another other low end instrument it grounds things enough for other instruments to churns out the atmosphere, which can really be felt well when they kick back in at the end of this song. The great thing about this album is they are writing songs and caring about the music while bringing it in a very heavy manner.

This album is littered with a great deal of interludes, which I do not think it really needs as they are already really good at setting the mood. 'V.O.A.D" sounds massive and works , it just feels like they have found the formula and working off that all the way down to the spoken vocals.  "Vindex" has a great deal of dark sonic intensity that they hit you with right from the start. This is buffered by the ambiance surrounding what they do. The synths even drape the more stomping death metal crunches they march out with. The do continue to prove themselves as a death metal band on this song. With a rolling mountain of double bass to trample you with. A fitting end as the track after this is just an outro. I will give this album a 9.5, and see how it sits with me, it competes with things like Mournful Congregation's "Book of Kings" and Loss in terms of sonic depth through atmosphere.
