Extreme pop is not a thing? That is what this band of spaced-out hipsters seems to think. The first song feels more like easy listening with cinematic dream pop thrown in, the way the strings soar out of control like amped up Phil Spector. By the second song, it's clear this is experimental shoegaze, which is fine by me; the drums help everything to click. To their credit, I appreciate their commitment to dynamics and going all out on the big chorus. There is even some screaming buried in the background.
"Soft & Quiet" is more ambient with electronic beats simmering under it. I like how the vocals are produced as they work really well as a texture while still having a hook before the dynamic kicks in. This does drop chaotically, but not an aggressive or metallic one. "SLAYMAXXING" is more aggressive in the glitched break hard-core attack that locks in. The song is just over a minute, but it gets the job done. Then they indulge themselves in a six-minute song that has an atmosphere almsot more like Ethel Cain. Though perhaps more overtly shoegaze, where Ethel Cain just gets depressed about living in a trailer park and winds up there. This also might be the album's best song.
The last song has a more pounding shoegaze sound before dropping back from the frenzy that is almost like Deafheaven.I am impressed, they take familar sounds and mine them into their own thig, the pop label is not really warranted unless that is code for our vocals have purose, which all bands no matter the genre should be doing. Everything clicks in place here I will give it a 9.5/
