Dying Remains : "Merciless Suffering"

Here is Canada's answer to Cannibal Corpse. So much so, they might as well have called themselves Canada Corpse instead. I am wearing a Cannibal Corpse shirt as I type this, so I appreciate them embarking upon a similar path. However, this kind of tribute wears thin after the first two songs, as I might as well just listen to Cannibal Corpse since they do it better. It's not a case of well, Cannibal Corpse has gone mainstream and does not play this sort of thing anymore, since George and the boys still go as hard as ever. It's also not a case of Cannibal Corpse breaking up and needing a band to fill the void, as they are still out there bringing it harder than ever.

By the time I get to " Sawblade Execution," it's all starting to run together. The gruff bark of the vocals is not as enunciated as George Fisher's, so the lyrics get lost in translation. "Under the Scalpel' is more listenable as they bring a little more groove in.  Most of these songs are under the three-minute mark, so it is not like they are dragging things out. "Crushed" and "Path of Brutality" are more of a monochrome expression of aggression with little dynamics to contrast the beating they deliver to your ears.

"Grotesque Remains" finds the unrelenting chug and the incessant bark of the vocals bleeding into everything else and beginning to exhaust me. I'll give this album a 7.5, since they are skilled musicians who are capable of capturing the feel of this mega beefy death metal sound, it just bores me because i have heard Cannibal Corpse do it better. But if your preferred genre of music is bands that sound like Cannibal Corpse, then this is worth checking out.
