Der Märtyrer : "s/t'

The debut album from this project finds an industrial sonic intensity amplified by a death metal aggression. In terms of songwriting, they are hitting you with a wall of sound, but riding the wave out rather than throwing in things like, say, a chorus to hook you in. That is not to say they do not stumble across some note worth sound as heard in the second song, but there is a great deal of noise and droning, and not enough groove or emphasis placed on vocal lies you can follow. Instead, you get harshly screamed bits mixed back into the guitars.

The third song has more of a deliberate groove to it, but does not shy away from the noisy sonics that color the song's periphery and gradually overtake it all together. The vocals get a little lost in this. I appreciate the idea behind it sounds like the lo-fi production, does not fully realize what they are going for here, and in some cases, it gives this sort of thing its charm, but it is never given the chance to have the clarity to see this developed into an actual song.  I like the samples being used, but they are also getting buried in the din.

The last song has more of an apocalyptic crunch to it that combines elements of what Ministry does with what Godflesh does. Granted, those are two sounds not far removed from one another. The vocals are harsh from within the machines, grinding them up and spitting them out. Things break down into a more minimalist ambiance before being built up into a harsh roar again. I will give this an 8, as the production keeps it one-dimensional when what they are doing has potential that would have been better invested in remixing this.
