The German bands kick up a bigger symphonic sound going into their new album. They lean into a metalcore direction at times with their anthemic songwriting, though the first track is more straight-up death metal than you might expect. The vocals have purpose, and they care about songwriting, which both work in their favor here. It took a second listen to "Confounder" to catch onto its groove, and there is a similar Eurot-thrashing that colors the bulk of their work with similar sonic colors. Most of it coasting on a flood of double bass.
"Whisper From Above" has a marginally more rock n roll feel. It is more accessible to a more middle-of-the-road rock festival audience. The guitar melodies are the staple of the song. It reminds me of where metal was in the early 2000s. You can call it melo-death. 'Those Left Behind' is a little more aggressive and rapid-fire in its attacks. But this also sounds like you average color by numbers Arch Enemy inspired band. 'Ten Days in May' also races through similar thrashing waters.
There is a more metal core flavor to "Numbered Days' that also finds sung vocals appearing thanks to Jesse from Killswitch, which work well. Overall it's about as mid as Killswitch in terms of heaviness. "Dore" has more prominent guitar melodies, but the overall feel is more color-by-numbers death thrash; it could be Darkest Hour or any other band along these lines. It is well done, just not all that original. This carries over into the 'Silent Guard," which is a little more melodic but struggles to hold my attention. I will give this album an 8 as it is well done for people who are into this sort of thing, but not dark or heavy enough for my tastes. It drops June 27th on Century Media
