Death is June :Coffin Mulch- "Spectral Intercession"

There is an unhinged thrash feel to the opening track of Coffin Mulch's new album. The vocal are a dry throat screamed exclamations more than they are a growl. I like the effects on the vocals to blend this other wise dry delivery into what is going down here. They do understand the importance of being deliberate and chugging things into a groove with it comes to  "Into the Blood". The vocals are the weakest thing about their over all sound. They seemed they are barked as more of an accent. I did not expect these guys to come from Scotland, but that is where were at . This is their debut album, so their sound is still growing. The guitar solos are very Slayer like in their chaos. They show how to pick up the tempo in the most effective fashion on this song.

"Mental Suicide" slows things down into more of a doomy stomp. When it gains momentum it falls into the more tried and true death metal tropes. This find my attention beginning to wane. Thing continue down a similar path on the more grooving "In the Grip of Death".. To their credit they have captured that grime ridden sound that feels like the guitars are covered in cemetery dirt. But this album is not solely focused on just capturing a sound as they care about the songs as well. There is a more Entombed feel to "the Fall of Gaia". They focus more on speed here, and it's less interesting. The grind into a gritty lumber with "Gateway to Unseen", but when they pour on the speed , it sounds more like everybody else.

"Infernal Mass" lurks with more purpose, giving the more Entombed like charge forward more effective contrast. I like how the samples are used on this song. "Eternal Enslavement " closes the album, with more of a death doom feel, which I prefer over just racing through things. There is a slight Obituary feel, but over all nothing special. I will give this album an 8.5, the bulk of it is pretty solid for this kind of death metal, and it only stumbles into the typical tropes of the genre when it dulls the sharp edges at times. This is being released by Memento Mori on June 30th.
