Finally some hip- hop willing to take risks and not just come rolling off the assembly line of an entertainment conglomerate. Detroit bred Brown, just did a stint in rehab, so this was more than likely recorded before that vacation was in play. He brags a lot about various drugs, so maybe he is realer than most. Though at South x Southwest, he apologized for writing so many songs about drugs. Hopefully sobriety won't ruin his weird. The title track certainly shines a light on the oddity that he is. "Garbage Pale Kids" earns a chuckle , but it is less focused than the first two songs. "Fentanyl Tester" is a better song, but more than likely a testament of what sent him to rehab. More rap needs tracks like this to work with .
"Burfict" works off the same kind of zaniness that has driven the album up to this point. "Shut Your Bitch Ass Up" loses a little of the momentum until it finds another groove midway into it. "Orange Juice Jones" moves with a difference cadence, though the formula to the rhyme schemes begins to become apparent. It is what I think of as the metaphor syndrome, as it compares one thing to another. This goes back to the Beastie Boys, as when I went back and listened to "Check Your Head " again a year ago it was full of it. There is more of a gospel feel coming from the samples leading into "God Loves You" .Things get more interesting again on "Run the Jewels" which samples "Going Back to Cali" .
There is an odd jazz excursion running under "Jack Harlow Combo Meal" , and yeah the song titles are pretty funny. "HOE" works as they slow things down, though rap in the same meter. The chaos is a little more organized, and once again gospel creeps into the background. They close the album strong with "Where Do You Get Your Coke From" which plays to their strengths. I will give this album a 9 which is better than the bulk of hip hop these days and shows you do not need an assembly line of producers and songwriters if you have any talent.
